For topping I use Cheez-It crackers. Very good!

 JJ (Texas) says:
Can absolutely make in the slow cooker, no need to brown, I just cut the butter in half because for some reason it is too much in the slow cooker and ends up floating on top.

 Kevin (Washington) says:
For a complete main dish meal I put in sliced up cooked bratwurst and replace the cream of chicken soup with Alfredo sauce.

Per slow cooker cookbook... This recipe can be done in a Crock-Pot - by browning hash browns first in oil, then transfer to slow cooker. Add rest of ingredients, stir well. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours. This way you can enjoy a favorite food - without heating up kitchen during summer weather. Hope this helps!

I've quite literally been making this exact recipe for years! I add extra sharp cheddar on top, use half a cup of deans French onion dip instead of chopped onions, and chicken stuffing as the topping.

This is the perfect recipe! Everyone loves it and you can't really mess it up. I make this for funeral dinners and church carry-ins and they are never any leftovers.

 Jamie (Maryland) says:
Good recipe but I always find these bland until I added the following: package of dried onion soup, large can of cream of chicken soup, entire container of sour cream, salt, pepper, garlic salt, seasoning salt, entire bag of shredded white/yellow cheese, topped with dried onions and crackers with the melted butter... will continue to make this way. Very good!

Instead of a bag of potatoes, I peel & boil my own until they are fork tender. I also use 1 cup of French onion dip instead of the sour cream. Delicious!

I use green onions in this recipe and Panko bread crumbs for the topping.

Everyone will love it! I let the mixing bowl sit over night, covered in the fridge then bake in the am. I add cream cheese onion and chive sometimes and I use 1/2 stick of butter to brown onions and cooked broccoli also to change it up :)

I substituted cream of chicken for cream of mushroom (vegetarian option). It was delish :)

 Kate (Montana) says:
I didn't want the little pieces of chicken from the cream of chicken soup in the casserole, so I strained them out first. Next time, I hope to find a cream of chicken soup that doesn't have any meat in it.

I use shredded hash browns and I crumble up Ruffles potato chips without any extra butter as a topping. Every family event I'm asked to make it.

This is my family's favorite. I fix it just like the recipe says and it comes out perfect.
