LAURA LYMAN'S DATE NUT BREAD 
1 pkg. pitted dates
2 tbsp. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. baking soda
2 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. chopped nuts

Cut up dates and pour the boiling water over them. Add shortening, sugar, salt and vanilla. When cool add egg and flour sifted with the soda and cream of tartar. Beat well, add nuts. Pour into pans, greased and floured. Bake about 1 hour at 350 degrees. Makes 2 medium sized loaves.
