CROCK-POT APPLE BUTTER
Approximately 3 lb. apples
3 cups sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
Dash of salt
3/4 cup water or fresh apple cider

Fill Crock-pot 3/4 full with peeled, cored and sliced apples. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until evenly mixed. Cover and cook on low setting overnight or until the butter is of a thick, spreadable consistency.

If apple butter has too much liquid, remove lid and cook on high until thickened. Stir often as butter thickens to prevent scorching.

Store in refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. Freeze for longer storage.

Variation: For a less sweet apple butter, substitute 1 cup honey for the sugar.

To can the apple butter, pack into hot jars leaving 1/4-inch headspace and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

Crock-Pot Apple Butter

This was really good. On the sweet side. I did substitute 1 cup brown sugar and 2 cups Splenda for the 3 cups sugar. I will cut back some of the Splenda next time but came out tasting good. Wish it had more apple taste than all the spices. Might cut back some on them too. Family liked it. Very easy!!

Great recipe! To make it a little easier, I didn't peel the apples and only cut them in quarters. I used my hand blender once they softened up a bit. I also only used 1/4 cup of honey (and no sugar) and it was plenty sweet for my taste.

I have used this recipe before so came back to find it this year. The apples off my tree were very small this year. Granny Smiths. I peeled as best as I could, but the peeler just didn't do the trick. So there were lots of peelings left. I put the butter in the blender after it all cooked down, and it is wonderful. And now to can them in jars.

Has anyone tried using Splenda for the sugar in the applebutter recipe? It really sounds good but both my hubby and I have to restrict our sugar. I am going to try it with Splenda but wondered if there were any special tips for using it??

Very good recipe. I used 2 cups of white sugar and 1 cup of brown sugar much better. It only made 6 half pints but very tasty.

Made it with fresh pears, it was awesome, just a tad too sweet, today I'm making it with granny smiths, cutting back on the sugar though.

Just want to remind people that are reducing the amount of sugar in the recipe and still canning: sugar is being used as a preservative as well as a sweetener in this recipe. Cutting back too much on the sugar and still canning may lead to problems with bacterial growth!

This turned out great. Everyone says it is the best apple butter ever! My apples didn't cook down so the next morning I poured it all in the blender on puree. Then I put it back in the crockpot to let it thicken. AND an ideal for the apple butter: I have a rival sandwich maker. I cut croissant dough in squares, put apple butter in the center, folded them over and pinched the edges into triangles, and cooked each one in the sandwich maker until dough was golden brown!!! SCRUMPTIOUS!!!

This is perfect.. I cooked mine for 24 hrs. half way through I took the lid off to let thicken. It is sweet, but I used Gala and Fuji apples and I should have thought about cutting the sugar back since the apples are very sweet by themselves once they are cooked. This is a recipe that I will be using from now on.

i have made three batches now and love the flavor. I filled my crock pot full of apples and placed a root of ginger in it for added flavor. It is on the sweet side if you use apple cider so this last batch I used water. I also used Honey crisp apples and it is delicious! I add it to my oatmeal and the flavor is incredible!

It took 20 hours to cook. It made 2 pints. We will try cooking in copper pot next time with bigger batch. It tastes good, a little too sweet.

I made this recipe last year and everyone loved it so this is the second time I am making it this year.. To answer a question somewhere here... Yes I use half brown sugar and half white sugar turns out beautifully and I can mine... And no an apple butter recipe is not meant to jel... Its a butter recipe... You can make apple jelly but totally different concept..

Love this recipe. I use water not apple cider and only 2 1/2 cups sugar and it is perfect. I do not feel you have to put it through a blender when you let it cook all night. the apples we used were from our trees which are jonathans and red delicious. I prepared the apples with my apple peeler corer.

Great recipe! I have never had apple butter but I really like it now. so after it cooked I put it in my Vitamix because I do not have a food mill or sieve like other recipes call for. it helped with the consistancy. now I have to can it. I was supprised how little it made. those apples really cook down.

Okay I did this, minus the salt, and thought it was perfect! I did mine w/ skin on, cut into small peices, and then after about 4 hours in crock pot, ran it all through the blender. It was at an applesauce consistency then.. then in the am ran it thru the blender again (liquify)and then got the smooth apple butter consistency. Amazing tasting!!!
