I have evolved this recipe into a Chicken Tot Pie. Add all the original ingredients plus chicken a vegetables. Either add two cans of white chicken (like Tuna cans) or cook chicken and add it. Then thaw a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and stir in. Put into oven for about 30 minutes and let everything get really hot, because it is all cooked. Then take it out, and top it with cheese. Turn off the oven and let it melt for a about 5 minutes. Great one dish meal!!!!

Absolutely divine. In Australia the best product to use are potato gems. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's comments especially the different variations to this recipe.

I use 1 lb. Pork sausage, cook with (1) cut up onion, (1) can cream of mushroom, (1) can cream of celery, (16 oz.) sour cream, pepper, no salt as the sausage is salty. Mix all together and cook 45 minutes. Take out of oven and top with cut up Velveeta cheese on top and put back in the over about 5 minutes to melt. Awesome...

I make this all the time. My kids love it! I always add hamburger with diced onions and green peppers. Tons of shredded chefdar on top. (sometimes I add an extra layer of cheese in the middle) next time i will add the crunchy onions on top. ; )

Thank you for posting a ground beef-free version!! It was good, but I didn't care for the canned onion, I'll sub a panko/butter/cheese mixture next time. But I'm just so grateful to have this casserole as I remember it in college. It wasn't until my MIL made her version, which IMHO she horribly ruined by adding hamburger, that I discovered that a ground beef version was very common. Me, I'll save the beef for meatloaf or hamburgers only.
