This whole conversation made me laugh so hard. What fun I had looking up a recipe! So I don't have hamburger, I thought I would try ham? Anyone tried that? Thanks for the recipe, and it's fun getting other ideas. so funny.

I love the tater tot cassorole, but if you are a good cook you can make things the way you want and they will turn out delicious. God Bless

I remember my mom making a tater tot casserole without meat, so I thought I'd look one up, most of them had meat in them, and I figured that might make it a meal, so I am trying this one with a couple of alterations. My hubby is allergic to mushrooms so I'm using cream of celery instead, and I'm adding hamburger. We shall see.

I think this will quickly become a family favorite. I made it with Hamburger and Cream of Celery soup so it would be a main course. I used extra cheese and my kids loved it, two of them went back for seconds. :)

Best way to make tator tot casserole is to put the onion tater tots layered in a casserole dish, fry the hamburger, then add cream of mushroom & chick soup, cheddar cheese soup, and sour cream to the hamburger, mix then layer the mixture over the tater tots then layer with lots of cheese. You can also do it without meat too.

Oh this is all too funny! Was looking for a different way to "spice" up the TT casserole and found many!!! Love all the suggestions! Here is an addition that I sometimes use: add one can of ranch style beans, good stuff! It's great to see this discussion is still going on and on and on..... :)

I've just read all the comments on tater tots casserole. I've never had it with ground beef, but just the recipe Jenna submitted. I agree that it is not a tater tot casserole unless it is made with tater tots. Doesn't matter a whole lot, but those who prefer the shredded poatatoes can use frozen hash browns, chopped onion, cream of celery soup, salt pepper and grated cheese. I haven't tried it with ground beef, but intend to. I loved this "discussion".

I was looking for a tator tot dish w/ meat for Church Potluck. Came across this recipe and it looked tasty. The comments were Funny at first, but now I'm totally lost! The more I read, the more ideas and variations...Now, I've got pen in hand and am starting to read them over again and jot down notes! Maybe I can come up with what sounds good to me that resembles the dish from childhood!!

Ok, you all are having much to much fun with this recipe!
A friend of mine makes this, and I'm going to try it too, I have 3 little grandkids who come over on Saturdays to spend the day, and I need something quick and not too time consuming to try. They don't usually like potatoes, so I'm going to "disguise" them with the meat and cheese and soup mix, I'll let you know how I make out! Won't be till Next saturday though.
Keep up the good work with the comments, It's Hilarious!

A tater tot by any other name is still a tater tot.

LOVE this! Would consider it more of a side dish than a casserole since it doesn't call for meat, but being a vegetarian...works for me! Would be great with brunch (maybe as a side for ham, for those of you who eat ham?). My mom always made something called Company Potatoes, which had similar ingredients (although it used the diced hash brown potatoes) and had diced onions cooked inside. I like this better, as the French's onions on top get all crunchy and toasty. Excellent recipe!
