Jay from the UK,
Why are we using canned and frozen food so much, you ask? You obviously aren't familiar with the American culture. If you spent a winter in the midwestern United States you might understand. If you're looking for healthy and fresh I wouldn't suggest Tater Tot Casserole, though. You don't have to eat it... but it works for us.

Read all the reviews and had many laughs. I tried the recipe with no hamburger, cream of onion soup, and added more shredded cheddar cheese. Love Love Love this casserole! I could almost hear my arteries hardening but it was very very good. Will be making this in the future, especially for pot luck dinners!

I make mine with a half pound of browned and crumbled ground meat and topped with a bunch of cheese.

As for the heated debate, this casserole requires tots for texture, but it works very well with any other FROZEN potato. Fresh potatoes don't work as well.

The one I made today was for brunch. It had 1/2lb of ground sausage, a couple onions and peppers finely chopped and cooked with the meat. Mmm delish.

I have enjoyed reading the comments. I also am an add the meat to it kind of person, I cook my meat with onion, garlic, after browned I add a can of french onion soup and let simmer and add a little cornstarch to thicken. I also fry my tator tots first, yummy!!

I prefer it without the hamburger meat. FYI McCain's Tater Tots are the best since they are very flavorful. Thanks for the recipe, very quick & easy and very yummy!!!! :)

This recipe gets me friends ;) I consistently substitute the sour cream for plain non fat yogurt because I prefer the taste. It is always a last minute thought and comprised of items in the fridge and cabinets. Convenient and tasty
