GERMAN STYLE RED CABBAGE 
1 med. cabbage
4-6 tart apples
1/3 c. shortening or lard
1/4 c. vinegar
1 c. water
1 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt

Quarter apples and remove core. Saute apples in shortening, shred cabbage, add to apple and shortening. Bring vinegar water and 1/2 cup sugar to a boil. Add to cabbage. Cook for 1 hour or until cabbage is done. Add sugar and vinegar to taste. Add vinegar teaspoon at a time.
