SLUMGULLION
This recipe has been in my family for years. I have eaten "Slum" since I was a child.

1 lb. ground meat
1 med. onion, diced
1 lb. can tomatoes
1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 cup macaroni, heaping
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

In a large skillet, cook ground meat and onions. When meat is done, drain excess grease.

In another pan, cook macaroni. Crush the tomatoes and add them along with the sauce, macaroni, salt and pepper to the meat and onions in the skillet. Let the whole mixture simmer until some of the juice from the tomatoes cooks away.

Feeds 3 to 4 people.

We always called this goulash. You can add mozzarella cheese to make it more like an imitation lasagna too.

I have been eating slumgullion for as long as I can remember.

I always thought that my mother just said that because she didn't know what to call it.

My wife still makes it and we have been married 65 years.

My Mother made this for a quick supper, but she used a pound of hot dogs and added a can of drained peas at the end. My children love it.

This is called Chop Suey in Central Maine. My Mom in PA made it as "Spaghetti in a Pan"', but when I married a Maine Boy, my Mother-in-law called it Chop Suey. In Maine it is made with Macaroni.

i have made-my parents before me- this many, many times. However this can be made with virtually any type of meat-veggies-sauce-spices-that are in your pantry or fridge. I've used it most times as it is very quick to do and also uses up those leftovers you aren't sure what to do with.

In the movie "It Happened on 5th Avenue" (1946 or 1947) the stew was referred to as Slumgllion

Oh my gosh. I was looking for a nut cluster recipe and caught this out of the corner of my eye. My Dad found Slum (short for slumgullian) recipe in a boating magazine back in the 1960's when I was a little girl. We made it on our boat and at home. It is definitely a family speciality and a dish we only eat in the family. My Dad's recipe used pork steak, green peppers, fresh tomatoes, onions, lots of garlic, salt and pepper to taste, rice and/or barley. Brown seasoned pork steaks in a dutch oven; put vegetables on to and cover with water. bring to a boil and then simmer for about 2 hours. pour in the rice and barley and cook until water is absorbed. Don't stir. The rice will stick to the bottom of the pan. Add more garlic as needed. Great with home made apple sauce and bread and butter.

OMG! I have made this because this was something my husband was raised on. I'd never had it before and never heard of it before. I thought it was just a made up name his mother gave this dish :) I am shocked to see it named on the Internet. We have this often. I am just so tickled to see this in print. BTW this is very, very good. Raised my boys on it too and make it when they come home. Now I'm hungry for it. I'll make it tomorrow.

We've had this dish ever since I was a kid but Mom always called it "goulash". So the recipe pretty much stays the same but it looks like the name is a regional thing! Very filling, great for busy nights when you don't have a lot of time in the kitchen, fills up the kids!
