This is freakin hilarious!! LMAO Usually in the comment section people try the recipe and give their opinion of it but I see nobody has done that yet! Everyone definitely has plenty of input though on how to make a proper tater tot casserole!!

I have made this recipe a couple times since I found it about a year ago... it's delicious! I don't use any meat, and the only change I make to the the recipe is adding a little more cheese. And putting the fried onions on about half way through baking, or else they burn.

I mean, seriously, how do you have tater tot casserole without the tots?

Gee...I saw the 'tator tot' receipe & thought I'd make it with a few MINOR changes. Get out your 9 x 13 baking dish. Dump in 3 lbs. of raw Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled & cut into 1/2" squares (1/8 is too small - 3/4 is too large - get out your ruler!!)... add 2 cups of fresh broccoli, cut into 1" flowerets, 3/4 cup carrot sticks or 327 sticks - whichever is easier for you to measure, add 1 small diced onion (if you're an onion freak, use a large one). Sprinkle (scantly or liberally - you decide, I don't want to appear too bossy)sea salt, fresh ground pepper, basil, oregano, parsley & red pepper flakes over the top & drizzle virgin olive oil over the top. Mix it all up (use your hands, feel the healthy goodness of it all). Bake at 350 until fork tender. Now, if this is sounding all too healthy, don't add the herbs & olive oil. Instead, drown it in your favorite creamed soup, cover it with your favorite shredded cheese & call it a day. OR, take Eric's advice & stick with the original plan.

This was entertaining! I've never made this before. Is it better with cream of chicken or mushroom? And can you cook the tots first before putting them in?

This was a much loved recipe when I grew up. My family used ground beef rolled, a layer of tator tots, with cream of chicken soup on top. Two full layers are ideal. Comfort food.

I don't know why everyone thinks that what Eric said was soooo funny. It's called improvising, everyone does it at some point or another and it will continue until the end of time. I am gonna add left over turkey (we made one last night) and then I am gonna personally shred some potatoes and toss in a bunch of cheese, onions, and probably some veggies. That is what you call "IMPROVISING". But all in all, everyone should make it how ever they want to. :)

Is this cooks.com or facebook? I've never thought so much about a tator tot casserole! I've been making the casserole based on a recipe in my church cookbook for 20 years. I've found that it tastes best when you mix half of the tator tots with the cream of chicken soup and ground beef, pour the rest of the tator tots on top, cook at 375°F for 45 min, sprinkle grated cheese on top, and bake for another 15 minutes. And I agree, the 13 x 9 pan works best. (I could have used this website 20 years ago!)

This is a great recipe for vegetarians! I substitute the cream of mushroom for cream of celery (mushrooms are about the only veggie I am not a fan of) and it tastes great! But either way, highly enjoyable. I have also substituted with soy cheeze for a similarly scrumptious and easy meal :)
