Why is evaporated milk listed twice? Isn't Eagle Brand milk also evaporated milk?

 Cooks.com replies:
Hi Stephanie,

Eagle Brand milk normally refers to sweetened condensed milk; evaporated milk is not sweetened.

I'm reading these reviews and everybody's saying this recipe is so easy, but I'm a little confused. Is the ice cream mixture poured into an ice cream maker? If so, why use rock salt and ice? What are the 12-15 oz cans and where can I buy them? Sorry for all the ?'s, but I've never made homemade ice cream before and I wanna be sure to know what I'm doing so that I don't mess up. Thanx a bunch.

 Charlotte Carlson (Nevada) replies:
You can buy ice cream makers at Walmart or Target. They use rock salt and ice to get the temperature down since these ice cream makers don't plug into a socket :) The same stores sell the rock salt. Can size reference means use regular size cans; e.g. Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk is 14 oz. Hope this helps.

OMG I love you so much, LOL. Here at our house no other ice cream comes through the door except "Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream," recently due to the high cost of Ice Cream I have been searching everywhere on the web for a home made recipe that closely simulates "Blue Bell Homemade," and this one is the one, it is easy, cheap (compared to the over $7.00 at the grocery store), and oh so yummy to my tummy. Thank you so very much.

 Kristy (Missouri) says:
I can't wait to try this. I live in Texas and we no longer have ice cream available in stores due to the Blue Bell problem. I mean, there are other brands, but I don't know anyone who buys those. So, I can't wait to try this one. :D

Hi Darrell,

The recipe calls for whole eggs. The eggs are what will thicken the ice cream.

 Sandy C (United States) says:
I'm not sure I made this correctly. The flavor is spot on! I fooled the recipe as best add i could. The eggs got foamy (how foamy are they supposed to be?). However, it says to beat mixture until stiff. Mine only got got to the consistency of cake batter. Very thick but not stiff. It didn't set up very well. I had it churning in ice cream maker for an hour and it was soupy. I froze the finish product over night and it did freeze but turned out very grainy. I'll keep at this until I get it right. Thanks for this delicious recipe.
