SLUMGULLION
This recipe has been in my family for years. I have eaten "Slum" since I was a child.

1 lb. ground meat
1 med. onion, diced
1 lb. can tomatoes
1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 cup macaroni, heaping
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

In a large skillet, cook ground meat and onions. When meat is done, drain excess grease.

In another pan, cook macaroni. Crush the tomatoes and add them along with the sauce, macaroni, salt and pepper to the meat and onions in the skillet. Let the whole mixture simmer until some of the juice from the tomatoes cooks away.

Feeds 3 to 4 people.

This recipe, my Dad's favorite, or a very similiar version, (I like to add cheese, sometimes mushrooms) of it has been in our family for years, also called SLUMGULLION. How stange. Love it.

This is very close to our old family recipe for Slumgullion too. Slumgullion was kind of a generic word for stew back in the day.

Well holy heck, was scrambling around in the old noggin thinking of what I could have for dinner tonight. I decided to try this, in memory of my dad, and for my wife, she's never had it, and I haven't had it since I was a kid. What really got me is how there's so many versions, all so similar to what we had, and that you all call it the same thing! For years I thought dad just made this up, name and recipe. I bet he's lookin' down laughing at me right now, =D

I too thought that this was a made up name by my Uncle. We add cooked bacon and cheese to ours and bake it. A great way to fill up my hollow-legged son!

Exactly as my Dad made it. I too thought it was a made up name as a kid. My thought it was made up too when I made it for her the first time. I loved it as a kid I love it as an adult. Making me hungry I guess I'll have to make some for supper tonight.

We have a very similar version in our family. My dad called it Slumgum. It was ground beef, egg noodles, stewed tomatoes and peas. I'm glad other people know about this. I never thought to look for it!

 Kay (South Carolina) says:
My father called it Slumgolli or Slumgolle. We did it exactly the same as the above, in TX and OK.

OMG I have often thought of this recipe that my Aunt Dean and her cousin Maryln use to make when I went up to Canton Ohio to visit her for the summer! I have wanted the recipe for ever, but my Aunt could never remember the recipe. She said it was really Maryln who made it she just did what she said... LOL! I just lost my Aunt at 89 in January so I thought all hope was gone, because her cousin passed a long time ago! Thank you for making a childhood meal come true!!!

This is what you fed a family of 4 boys in the 50s. At least once a week.

I too thought this was a made up name by my Grandmother. Our version also included kidney beans. Nothing better then comfort food from your childhood!

I was watching the old movie "It happened on 5th Avenue" a great Christmas movie. They cook and discuss Slumgullion...that's what made me look up the recipe. I think I'll try it! Love finding recipes through old movies! Some time, try the recipe given in "In Which We Serve" for Grog!

I have been making this for years, minus the onions cause I don't like them. I got it from my late mother-in-law and she always called it Goulash. It's one of my son's favorite meals
