2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk

2 c. oatmeal

On stovetop, mix and boil for 3 minutes butter, sugar and milk. Remove from heat and add rest of ingredients. Place on waxed paper by the spoonful. Let cool and ready to eat.

My "Mama" called these Preacher Cookies because they are fast to cook in case the Preacher drops by unexpectedly.

Preacher Cookies

 Gloria Hilton (Virginia) says:
Great recipe. My 50 year old recipe calls for 3 cups of "1 minute oatmeal" and it always worked for me. Preachers in the past also dropped in at dinner since they were unpaid. Preacher cookies could fill them up before dinner!

Great recipe... yes, preachers did always seem to drop by unexpectedly - especially at meal time and also if they knew someone was a good cook... Recipe is also good with little bit of crushed pecans...

My "mama" said the same thing, and she used 3 cups of oatmeal as well. I don't know how many years she baked these, but it was at least 40 years ago. I've brought them to Minnesota with this name and I'm curious to know if people from other states grew up making these.

These are awesome! I grew up eating these! Funny someone mentioned "it must be a Virginia thing". I grew up in Michigan. My Mom made these all the time & she grew up in Virginia. Maybe it is a Virginia thing, LOL!

Yep...it IS a Virginia recipe and I think the name started in our little area. We had a preacher's wife who made these for the youth group one time and we loved them. When we asked her what they were called, she said, "I just call them the Preacher's Cookie 'cause he loves them so much." Everyone in the area started sharing the "Preacher Cookie" recipe...LOL...and here we are....many many years later!

 Martha (Virginia) says:
I grew up in MS and we called them nobake cookies. I think the cookies were just called Preacher cookies in VA. When I moved here 15 years ago I heard them called Preacher cookies.

Noel Lynne Figart (New Hampshire) says:
My mother's recipe (she's a 13th generation Virginian) called them California Boiled Cookies.

I heard of them being called preacher cookies as an adult and liked the name better, so that's what I started calling them.

 Carol K (Pennsylvania) says:
History says that it was called "Preacher Cookies" because homesteaders always had these ingredients on hand. When they saw the preacher coming down the road for a visit they could whip them up real quick in order to have something to offer while he was visiting. This is the one recipe my son requests when I start making cookies.

 Chasity (Virginia) says:
Best preacher cookie recipe I have ever tried. The texture of the cookie is perfect. After reading the reviews I decided to add more quick cook oats (about 2 1/2 cups). They turned out perfect :)

My Mom made these growing up. All of us loved them. I made them for my boys as they were growing up. They loved them too. Now I make them for my grandson and we all still love them. Getting ready to make a batch and was checking my recipe against others as I couldn't remember the exact amounts and I saw the question as to if these cookies were named from VA. I don't know, but I'm in NC but my Mom called them no-bake cookies. It was while I was talking with a co-worker years ago that he told me they were called Preacher Cookies. I love the name and the cookies!

I am a native of South Carolina. My husband spent part of his childhood in Virginia. He told me about "Preacher Cookies" when we got engaged in 2010. He found this recipe and we have used it several times over the years. These are often for sale in deli departments at grocery stores, but they are called "no-bake cookies".
