NEXT RECIPE:  CUCUMBER SALAD

CROCK POT BEEF ROAST
3 to 4 pound roast beef or round steak
salt and pepper
1 small onion, chopped
1 pkg. brown gravy mix
1 cup water
1/2 cup ketchup (Hunts)
2 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 cup red wine (optional)

Place meat in slow cooking pot. Sprinkle meat with salt and pepper. Combine remaining ingredients; pour over meat. Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours.

If desired, add small peeled potatoes and carrots. Sauce can be thickened with 2 tablespoons flour dissolved in 1/4 cup of water.

I usually skip the potatoes and carrots and mix the roast or round steak with egg noodles.

Am going to try this for the weekend. Per reviewers - will use some of their subs. Garlic instead of the powder - add veg's 1/2 way through cooking... plus will add a little of the onion soup mix. This HAS to be fantastic.

This is the worst BBQ I've ever made. And it turns into beef BBQ after the beef is shredded. I even tried it served over noodles, no improvement. My son ate it as a sandwich on a bun. Many other good BBQ recipes to waste your time and $$ on this one.

It's a recipe for Roast Beef. It doesn't even pretend to be a recipe for beef BBQ...

Definitely used the red wine.....acts like a tenderizer!!
Definitely an easy recipe though I do sear the roast first...copying my Mom who was a great cook.

This has been cooking for just 45 minutes and I can already smell the aroma. Without a doubt the best roast recipe I have ever come across. Thank you very much. The wife is working out of town this week and I don't like to patronize restaurants all the time.

Thanks, Jenny! This recipe makes an excellent pot roast; however, I like to sear the beef pieces before adding them to the pot. I think it seals in the flavor better. Although adding the red wine is optional, it adds that extra pop of flavor.

This is an outstanding recipe. Ran out of catsup, so used chilli sauce instead. Don't use wine to cook. Added one carrot chopped very small for flavor. Meat was a bottom round roast. My crock pot was inherited from my parents, and I am no youngster, so it must have been purchased in the early '60s. When the liquid didn't seem to be doing much after 2 hours on low, I measured the temperature, which was half the recommended value, so I switched it to high for the rest of the day. I have never enjoyed anything that came out of this crock pot before, and would not have used it again except for the inexpensive meat. However, the result this time was magnificant; it was hard not to eat the whole thing at one meal. The noodles were a great touch, and they don't seem as diet-smashing as potatoes. It was just as good as leftovers too. Try the chilli sauce substitution; I don't think you will be sorry.

Has anyone tried this with a frozen roast? I don't have time to thaw...

Excellent flavour - used beef broth instead of gravy mix and omitted the wine. Next time I would have the ketchup to cut down on the sweetness. Family loved it!

I love this recipe, it was very easy & tastes amazing, I skipped the wine & instead of Catsup I substituted a Bruschetta. Delicious.

Very nice, rich taste. I modified by using a beef bouillon cube instead of the gravy mix, 2 cloves of garlic instead of powder, and added a bay leaf and 2 sliced carrots. Served over noodles, it was wonderful!

Just tried this put celery and peppers in as well as water instead of the wine. Just waiting for it to get done. Put it on around 1030 or so. So I will write how it turned out after we eat it lol.

This recipe was amazing, even my child who doesn't like meat loved it. We slow cooked it for 8 hours with a run of the mill rump roast not high end and it fell apart and the flavor was incredible. Used to liquid from the crock pot to make a gravy, highly recommend this to anyone!!
