QUEEN ELIZABETH CAKE 
CAKE:

1 c. chopped dates
1 c. hot water
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 c. butter, softened
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
3/4 tsp. baking soda

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cook dates in water until paste like, cool. Sift flour and baking powder together, set aside. Beat butter until creamy, then beat in sugar. Add egg, beat well. Mix baking soda into cooled date mixture and add to batter along with flour mixture. Mix well and pour into greased 8 inch square baking pan. Bake 45 minutes or until done.

TOPPING:

5 tbsp. butter
3 tbsp. cream
1/2 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. chopped nuts

Mix topping ingredients in saucepan and boil 3 minutes. Spread on warm cake and broil about 2 minutes until bubbly (watch carefully to prevent burning).
