1 c. dates, chopped
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 c. walnuts

Add soda to dates and boiling water. Cool. Cream shortening, egg, sugar, and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with nuts and date mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for one hour or until done.
