DATE ORANGE BARS 
1 c. cut up dates
1/2 c. sugar
3/4 c. water or orange juice
1/2 lb. orange slices

Bring to boil mixture of first three ingredients. Cook this until thick. Add to this orange slices, stir until smooth.

BATTER:

1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 c. flour

Sift the flour and baking soda. Cream sugar, butter, vanilla and add beaten eggs. Add the sifted flour mix. Put half of batter in cake pan, 9 x 13 inches, then spread on the date mixture. Then add last half of batter.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes in greased pan. NOTE: I sometimes add a little water to the last half of the batter. This makes it easier to spread.
