DATE & ORANGE BARS 
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. shortening
2 eggs, beaten
2 tbsp. milk
1 1/3 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream brown sugar and shortening. Add remaining ingredients.

FILLING:

1 c. dates, cut up
10-12 candy orange slices, cut up
3/4 c. water
1/2 c. sugar

Cook together. Remove from heat and add 2 tablespoons flour. Put half of dough in greased 8"x13" pan. Spread filling over and cover with remaining dough (as well as possible). Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool and cut into squares.
