Never remove the lid to take a "peek." I prefer a glass lid to see how nicely the dumplings develop. Joy of Cooking has a recipe for prune dumplings, which sounds delicious.

Easy peasy. Added garlic powder and used chicken broth and thyme to the mixture. Loved it. Needs way longer than 12 minutes. Mine took 2 hours!

I was looking for 30 minutes before I found this basic recipe for dumplings, thank you for finally appearing. Most recipes called for bisquick or other strange ingredients.
Made us a happy cold weather finish to the meal. ma

Very traditional recipe that produced excellent results, very light and fluffy. Alternatives:
Savory:
Add mixed herbs (sage and parsley work well)
Grated strong chedder cheese and sundried tomatoes
Fried bacon and onions
Sweet:
Add sugar plus
mixed dried fruit or finely chopped fruit & spice e.g apple and cinnamon
Serve with either vanilla icecream, double (heavy) cream or brown sugar and butter. (These fruit dumplings are similar to 'spotted Dick' pudding and traditionally (in UK) served with brown sugar and butter, very yummy!! )
