APPLE CRISP
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter
1 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups apples, sliced
1 tbsp. water
1/2 tsp. cinnamon (or to taste)
1/4 tsp. ground ginger or freshly grated (optional)

Cooks Tip: If your apples need a lift, sprinkle lightly with a few drops of fresh lemon juice, vanilla, or Calvados - but be careful not to overdo!

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Wash, peel and core apples.

Cut cold butter into chunks. Using a pastry blender, work butter, sugar, salt and flour together until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Place apples into a buttered baking dish. Add water, cinnamon and ginger (optional). Cover with flour mixture.

Bake in a preheated 375°F oven just until apples are tender; about 1 hour.

Very good recipe... I also added more cinnamon to the topping and the apples as well. In addition, I added 1/2 cup brown sugar to the topping and it made it even better I think.

This recipe was a hit as the Christmas Eve dessert. I added a 1/2 cup brown sugar to crumble as was suggested by another reviewer. I also added cinnamon as well to the crumble. What a wonderful flavor! I would definitely recommend this recipe.

Very good. I would limit cooking time to about 40 minutes if using a glass dish.

Great recipe. I really suggest following the part about peeling the apples. I didn't the first time and it just wasn't the same. Very tasty. I use extra cinnamon and brown sugar instead of white.

I have made it this way all my life except the oiled baking dish is not needed if you use replace it with water. I also sprinkle the cinnamon on the top prior to putting the crumbs on it. You can throw in some rasberries for tartness. I use cortland or granny smith. My mom used Mac's.

I'm an amateur cook, and this worked super well. I used one of those convection ovens, and mine cooked in 40 minutes. It was delicious. Thank you!

Everyone went crazy over this apple crisp and it was so easy. I've made it a couple of times now and we still love it. I used two Granny Smith apples & two red delicious or other brand of a milder apple than the granny Smith. Works perfect!
