GERTRUDE ARMSTRONG CHOCOLATE
CAKE
 
This is my family's favorite cake and is delicious when served warm from the oven.

2 cups sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup water
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift together sugar and flour. In saucepan bring to a boil shortening, butter, water and cocoa. Pour over flour mixture while hot. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Bake in large cookie sheet with sides or 2 (8x8-inch) greased and floured pans. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes.

ICING:

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
4 tbsp. cocoa
6 tbsp. milk
1 (1 lb.) box confectioners' sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup pecans, chopped

Bring to a boil butter, cocoa and milk. Add confectioners' sugar, vanilla and pecans. Mix well and spread over cake while both cake and icing are hot.
