CRUMB TOP APPLE PIE 
FILLING:

2/3 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
8 lg. apples, peeled and sliced thin (about 3 c.)
2 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. butter

CRUMB TOPPING:

1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1 stick butter, soft
1 c. all-purpose flour

FILLING: In large bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add apples. Sprinkle on water and lemon juice. Toss until well coated. Spoon into deep dish pie shell. Dot with butter.

TOPPING: Mix together by hand until crumbly. Top pie. Bake 50-60 minutes in preheated 350 degree oven.

The soft butter did not work for me in the crumb topping. Much better to use it harder to make the actual crumbly mix vs a smooth, almost cookie type of batter.

Same issue with butter, I put all the topping ingredients into my food processor instead of mixing by hand and also added a bag of chopped walnuts....topping was awesome!!

I usually soften the apples by sauteeing them in a bit of butter before filling the pie shell. I brought this to my neighbor's on Thanksgiving, and now make it regularly for him as it falls into his low/no salt diet.

I thought it was a fairly simple recipe without to many complicated ingredients. As for the crumb topping, i added some oatmeal just for fun and it turned out great with nice crumbly texter. I would recommend trying it.
