CRUNCH-TOP APPLE MUFFINS 
Sift together:

2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. sugar

Add:

4 tbsp. shortening
1 egg
1 c. milk

Mix all ingredients with pastry blender or mixer. Fold in:

Chopped apples (1 c.)

Fill muffin cups 2/3 full. Sprinkle over tops:

1/2 c. finely chopped apples
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. sugar

Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Makes 12.
