Fool proof recipe! I noticed at last minute that I was out of bread. Decided to make biscuits ... but out of milk! Made these biscuits in two shakes of a lambs tail. Added garlic and grated cheese. I even accidently baked at 400°F instead of 450°F (geez louise) ... they turned out delicious!

So glad I stumbled upon this recipe. We like eggs and milk but this appealed to my thrifty side. :) I followed Monica's lead with the finely shredded cheddar and garlic powder before kneading. These taste even better as they 'age' in a air tight container in the fridge. (next day or two) split one open and threw in some tuna salad, and a slice of cucumber, carrots sicks and a glass of tomato juice on the side..Made for a wonderful snack/light lunch. Also nice with a dish of peaches. Thanks for posting this.

I used this recipe to make sausage rolls yesterday. Never made sausage rolls before and haven't mastered pastry yet. Added the cheddar and garlic powder as I did the first time. Rolled out the dough, cut into 3 long rectangles and put a long roll of seasoned ground pork on each and then rolled them up. Seam on the bottom. Finally cutting each log into 4 pieces. Cut slits in the top of each one and baked at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes. They came out awesome! Next, I'll try ground turkey spreading a thin layer of cranberry sauce on the dough first.

I love making home-made biscuits from scratch. These were actually even better than my normal biscuits. The only complaint was that they were too salty, and I added less than half what the recipe called for. Next time I'll only add a pinch of salt. I figured they would be terrible with no milk, but hey! I was surprised! I also added in a few spoonfuls of mayonnaise since that was the only dairy product I had in the fridge. Yummy!

They came out not bad for a first attempt. Not one of my better creations. I found I add to add almost 3/4 of a cup of water to get the dry ingredients to "stick" together. I used a drinking glass to cut the biscuits. I like the idea of garlic and grated cheese. The outside of the biscuits were but inside was not quite done. If I leave them in the oven any longer, I was worried the outside was going to burn. I am not sure what I am going to do about that. Maybe cut back on the baking soda or bake them 15 minutes.

Looks good. Out of milk and do not want to go to the store. I am going to use this recipe as the shell for peach fried pies. Trying to recreate my great grandmothers apricot pies while making do with what I have on hand. Thanks! Funny that the guy in Arizona complained about having to add more water than called for. What is it 110 degrees there? Probably evaporated.

 Joanie (Oregon) replies:
Nicolas, I think your oven was running a little hot, so your biscuits were not done in the middle but you were afraid of burning the outside. Try lowering your oven temperature (and invest in an oven thermometer for accuracy). Hope that helps!

They came out perfect!! I took the advice of Nicolas and added 3/4 cup of water instead and they are so good. Perfect texture. Next time I am going to add cheddar cheese and jalepeno to them. Thank u for this recipe! :)

Delicious! They came out perfect for me as well. I added a little extra water, but not a whole 3/4 of a cup. I agree with Hannah that they were a little too salty. Next time I will use a bit less salt. Other than that, this is a wonderful, easy, perfect last-minute recipe!

I halved the recipe. Added a generous amount of vanilla extract and a 1/4 c. sugar to make these a more dessert like biscuit. I then sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on top of them. These biscuits could be eaten by themselves or be served over warm apples with a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream :) YUM!

Baking powder has milk in it... is there anything else this can be subbed with?
 #41739
 Cooks.com replies:
Hi Allergictomilk,

Baking powder doesn't contain milk. But you can use baking soda mixed with cream of tartar as a substitute.

To make a single-acting baking powder at home, combine 1/3 teaspoon baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar as a substitute for 1 teaspoon of baking powder.

These were great! I was a little nervous about making biscuits with no dairy, but they came out perfect! I made garlic butter to go on top and didn't bother rolling them, just dropped them. Definitely recommend these!

These are so easy and tastes delicious. Definitely recommend adding cheese. I stopped kneading the dough and I think they end up moister and lighter.

I love this recipe - it's so versatile! I used 3 tbsp grapeseed oil and 3 tbsp Smart Balance Light. I would definitely agree less salt could be used too. I love all the great variations everyone has posted and it's so handy to have a biscuit recipe that is quick and easy - especially when you run out of milk and eggs like I did today.

It was a fantastic recipe! They turned out quite well, i also spread a little butter on top of them before i baked them which browned them quite nicely, according to my kids they taste great with jam or cream cheese.

This is a fantastic recipe for anyone who cannot eat dairy products (me!). It's a nice compromise, as my better half has no problem with dairy. This way, we both win! =)
