I have made this with an Oreo cookie pie shell instead of the traditional graham crackers shell and it's awesome.

I grew up 10 minutes outside of Amish country in Ohio. First of all, what makes Amish food beyond delicious, is the fact they they are not lazy,short cut cooks. Second, Everything is real & from scratch. having eaten this pie for decades, it DOES NOT have cool-whip or instant pudding. It is from scratch, laborious several egg yolk pudding. It is REAL whipped cream. This is NOT even close to the real thing, despite what Yoder's sells in Sarasota... Yoder's in Hartville Ohio is pure & simple. Cool whip, is an insult.

This recipe is almost spot on to the Amish-restaurant-style Peanut Butter custard pie. It was delicious and a HUGE hit with my family for Christmas! I will be making this frequently for special occasions going forward!

I saw this pie on an episode of man versus food. It was so easy to make and so yummy. I am making one with my nephew and niece for Christmas using banana pudding instead of vanilla to see how that turns out.

Having lived in Sarasota, Florida, which has an Amish and Mennonite community and genuine Amish restaurants, I was spoiled by the peanut butter pie that you could only get from those places. The recipe above is a perfect shortcut, quick way to get a great version of the pie. I believe the restaurants used a homemade pudding, but the instant used here is fine. Despite it's name, it's not overwhelmingly flavored by peanut butter. There just a hint of the flavor in the pie, which is absolutely scrumptious. Variations including adding a layer of chocolate (pudding or melted) on top of crust (if using melted, let it harden up again before adding the crumbs and vanilla pudding...also amazingly good) or using a flavored whipped cream, such as French Vanilla or chocolate. All are easy variations on a very easy to make pie that most people don't expect to like. I can't tell you how many people I've had to entice into just tasting it. Once they do, they are hooked, and want the recipe so they can make it. One caution: make sure that you mix enough sugar into the peanut butter sp the mixture is almost dry, and breaks apart. If the mixtue is too soft, you end up with stings of peanut butter and sugar, rather than the crumbles they should be. This is also delicious with a graham cracker crust.

First time trying a peanut butter pie and it was so yummy. Might try chocolate pudding next time just to see how it would taste, but my husband thought this one was excellent :D

This is very good and simple to make. It would be really good with chocolate pudding, in place of vanilla pudding.
