BEST HOMEMADE KAHLUA
1 (12 cup) pot very strong coffee (chocolate flavored is best)
2 lbs. light brown sugar
4 to 6 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 bottle 190 proof Clear Springs or Everclear

Bring coffee to a boil in dutch oven or large pot. Gradually add 2 lbs. light brown sugar and return to boil stirring constantly. Let cool until room temperature. (I add up to 1 cup of ice to cool faster and place pot in sink of cold water).

When completely cool, add the vanilla and 190 (I prefer the Clear Springs). It is ready to serve.

I like to fill the Clear Springs bottle first and put away to age for special occasions. I have made this recipe for many years and everyone who tries it likes it much better than the recipes with vodka.

Add Vodka for Black or White Russians. Chocolate Velvet Coffee is what I like to make my Kahlua with, usually, but I have also made really good flavors with Hazelnut, French Vanilla and Chocolate Macadamia Nut. Sometimes, I like to add a little almond extract to give it an Amaretto flavor.

I LOVE this recipe....as does my hockey team. I have started a tradtition of "Kahlua Night" where I make a batch and bring it to my teammates as a reward for coming to our 10:50 PM games. I got online and ordered plastic bottles and lids (bulk) off of USPlastics website. Much cheaper than buying glass ones elsewhere.

I made a couple gallons of home-made Kahlua while in law school in the early 80's... I was married in December 1983 and my then-new wife discovered my batch. She is a lover of coffee-flavored drinks, and has consumed the two gallons over the years. She finished the last of it approximately a year ago, and it definitely does improve with aging. Great stuff for very little investment.

I'm going to try this for Christmas gifts this year and would like to know how much it makes as well. Does anyone know?? Also, since I'm not a coffee drinker I don't own a coffee pot (yeah, I know, crazy right?). Somebody be very precise and tell me what you mean by "strong" and which coffee is the absolute best to buy for this recipe.

it sounds like a great recipy but I'm confused on what size bottle of 190 proof clear Springs 1.75 lt, 750ml or smaller??? also I would like to know how much Kahlua I'll end up with, since I'm trying to make 12 bottles and is hard to adjust the measurements.

She said to use a fifth of everclear. The measurement "A fifth" comes from "1/5 of a gallon", which is 25.6oz, but the liquor guys round down to 25oz, I am told.

My husband would make a batch in plastic milk jug and we'd gift it in swing top bottles collected from French/Italian? lemonade/orange drinks (think World Market stocks these now) or in swing top Greolsch beer bottles.

I tried the boiling chocolate mint with the coffee and it was delicious, even better than the original recipe. I also tried both the Millstone chocolate and regular coffee it turns out much better with the chocolate millstone.

You can find 190 proof Everclear In the Class SIX of a military base, or National Guard PX. Now all you need a friend in the Military that likes Kaluha that will pick some up for you.

ok..... I have been making Kah. for many years.... use empty liquor bottles... Cheaper and if it is good they don't care what the bottle looks like! The coffee needs to be strong! double is ok but triple is best! I usually use espresso grounds. I have always used grain alc. it makes it so u can choose how strong u want it, vodka decreases in alc. content! Vanilla beans are very expensive in comparison but real vanilla extract is fairly cheap at costco or sams club! Lastly if you add cream to any recipe it will spoil and separate fairly quick. Add it to your drink when u make it! it does get a "little" better with age but is just fine the next day.

Has anyone ever added any type of cream to this recipe such as heavy cream? I am just guessing that it would make it better.

Definitely be creative. Strong with the Millstone brand to me was double the normal amount of grounds.

Chill out, on the exact measurements, part of the fun is coming up with your own mixture.
