1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/3 c. sifted cake flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 c. walnuts, chopped

Cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, chocolate, and vanilla. Beat well. Sift together flour, salt, and soda. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Mix well. Stir in nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon of dough onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake in a 350 degree oven 12- 15 minutes.

Frost tops with chocolate frosting when cooled. Makes approximately 3 dozen cookies.
