GOOD NEIGHBOR LOAF 
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup boiling water
2 tbsp. grated orange rind
1/3 cup orange juice
2 tbsp. grated orange rind
1/2 cup chopped dates (or 1/4 cup chopped raisins)
1 cup sugar
2 tbsp. melted butter or oil
2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts (walnuts or Brazil)

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Sift together dry ingredients. Set aside.

Put boiling water in a bowl, add orange rind and juice, dates or raisins, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, the beaten egg and the nuts in order given. Stir to blend well. Add the sifted dry ingredients, blend thoroughly.

Pour into a greased and floured 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 3-inch pan.

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour.

Cool on wire rack, wrap in wax paper. Store in cake pan or bread box.
