APPLE BROWN BETTY 
1 c. all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tbsp. baking powder
1/4 c. butter
1/3 c. milk
1 egg

Sift together flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. Work in butter finely with fork or pastry blender. Stir in milk combined with egg. Spread dough in a shallow square or rec-tangular pan, rubbed with butter. Cover top with overlapping wedge-shaped slices of cooking apples.

Sprinkle with mixture of 1 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Dot with bits of butter, using about 2 tablespoons. Bake in hot oven (400 degrees), about 40 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve with hot lemon or vanilla sauce.
