ANISE CUT-OUTS 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. anise extract
1 egg, unbeaten
1/2 c. molasses
4 - 4 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/3 c. hot water

Cream sugar and shortening, salt and anise. Add half of flour. Dissolve soda in water. Add egg then remaining flour alternately with soda water. Mix well. Chill several hours or overnight. Roll thin on pastry cloth rubbed with flour and sugar. Cut into shapes. Bake 5-7 minutes, 375 degrees, on greased baking sheet.
