3 cups sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter (at room temperature)
1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. orange, lemon, rum or coconut flavoring (or a combination)
5 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp. baking powder

Mix sugar, butter and shortening until smooth. Add vanilla, additional flavorings (if desired) and eggs. Beat well, add flour and milk, beat about 5 minutes. Add baking powder. Beat 2 minutes. Pour into 2 loaf or 1 tube pan that has been greased and lined with wax paper.

Bake at 350°F one hour or until tester comes out clean when stuck in cake. Cool in pans about 10 minutes. Take out of pans. Put in a tight container until cold.
