FRIED DOUGH
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. shortening
1/3 c. milk

Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. Blend in shortening with pastry blender. Stir in milk with a fork until soft dough is formed. On lightly floured surface, knead dough 2 or 3 times. Pat smooth to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into fourths with a floured knife.

Place two at a time into the deep fat fryer, turning often once they reach the top to brown evenly. Cook for 4-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels. You may sprinkle with cinnamon, confectioners' sugar or butter. Sit and eat.

This is a awesome recipe but is good with butter and you can use a frying pan if you don't have a deep fryer.

I tried this recipe hoping it'd be like the dough at the fair, but mine tasted more like a buiscuit than fried dough. Did I do something wrong?

Really good recipe. Easy to make and delicious, too. I used brown sugar, and mixed some candy sprinkles into the batter. Might try chocolate chips or cocoa powder next time.

Actually is an after dinner treat served at an old Mexican buffet restaurant in the Houston/Pasadena, TX area, and are called Sopapillas, always served with honey ....poke a hole in the puff, and squirt in the honey, then try to eat in a cleanly manner, lol, thank goodness this old restaurant chain still believes in still wrapping thier silver in linen napkins, cuz honey is virtually impossible to deal with using a paper napkin...yin, yin, well worth its sticky fingers to finish off a delightful meal from Panchos!! Been enjoying this treat for over 40 years. The honey is a must to enjoy the flavor of fried dough. You will be hooked for sure once you have with the honey, very addictive!! Enjoy!
