GRILLED AHI STEAKS (YELLOW FIN
TUNA)
 
2 (8 oz. ea.) yellow fin tuna steaks

Marinade:

1 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 clove crushed garlic (for each steak)
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
small amount of sea salt, to taste
fresh ground black pepper, to taste

In a shallow 9x13-inch glass dish, prepare all of the marinade ingredients. Remember, if you have more than 2 (8 oz.) tuna steaks, you might need to adjust the ingredients to marinate. Marinate both sides (dredge steaks and get marinade on both sides). Let sit in refrigerator for 30 minutes before grilling. Note: Soy sauce will overpower tuna if you marinate for too long!

Light the grill while tuna is marinating. Once coals are white (30 minutes) spread them and clean the grill, then wipe with oil so steaks don't stick.

Grill for 4 minutes or less per side for 1 inch steaks, depending on how you like them. Steaks should be firm with pink in the middle. If you prefer steaks to be more rare, grilling time should be 2 1/2 minutes on each side.

Recommended Side dishes: Serve with white and long grain wild rice (We used Vigo) and grilled yellow squash cut lengthwise, sprinkled with Sea Salt and pepper squash and drizzled with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Use the same marinade as for the tuna. For grilled squash, brush with marinade frequently during grilling, and grill until just tender.

Loved this marinade! I added some ground ginger and about an ounce of white wine, skipped the salt because the soy was salty enough. Thanks for the tips on grilling times, perfect!

Got a high quality 1.4 lb Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) and used this marinade. Grilled it over charcoal and it was very tasty. Between the red color of the fish and the soy based marinade, the fish had a color resembling steak. Simply awesome!

Fantastic marinate, thank you so much for sharing and to everyone else for the lesson on the proper nomenclature of tuna species. I fish the bays and flats of south Texas and formerly in Florida and know snook, speckled trout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, snapper, grouper, flounder and even the lowly sheepshead (fine eating when properly prepared) but tuna is not my quarry fishing inland. I do appreciate the recipe and all the other reviews I read before trying. Thanks all and good fishin' to ya...

Excellent recipe!!! Two Ahi Steaks from Costco (1.5 lbs), marinated for about 45 minutes, seared on high heat for 2 minutes each side (500°F). Entire family loved it! Substituted teaspoon of minced garlic for the cloves. Will definitely serve again!

This is an awesome summertime recipe. I tried it for the second time over the weekend, but I used zucchini on the side instead. The meal was wonderful and my family was quite impressed. I also threw a quick fruit salad together to give something opposite to taste. It's a perfect healthy recipe.

I have used this recipe many times since finding it a few years ago. It is awesome! I mix everything up in the blender and emulsify the marinade. It seems to work best to blend flavor.

Recipe calls for way too much soy sauce, as several others have commented; I used 1/4-cup, and that was enough. Otherwise, the recipe is sound and the results were very good. Do add shredded ginger for an extra dimension to this Asian-style preparation.

Just made this recipe. Insteaded of outside grill I just pan fried with a little olive oil and over Jasimin rice it can out great. I would say 30 mins marinating is a little too long. But loved it.

I'm sorry, but 1 cup of soy sauce is WAY too much, and 30 minutes of marination is also overkill. I followed the recipe but put in 3 steaks instead of 2. I also marinated them for only 5-8 minutes. They still tasted way too soy saucy, and afterwards I ended up pouring a ton of marinade down the drain. I would recommend cutting the soy sauce to 1/3 cup or less.

This is a recipe I have used for over a year, and I love it. I do alter from the original, adding 2 tbsp. honey and a pinch of ginger if no fresh is around, as well as I reserve a bit of the marinade to brush the flipped side of the steak while the other is grilling. I also slice the lemon, and add it to the steaks with sesame seed, giving it a true Ahi flare.
