1 c. warm buttermilk (not hot) 1 pkg. yeast 1/2 tsp. baking soda 3 tbsp. sugar 1/2 c. shortening 2 1/2 c. plain flour 1/2 tsp. salt Warm buttermilk, stirring as warm will keep it from curdling. Mix yeast into warm buttermilk. Stir yeast until it dissolves. Add salt, sugar and soda. Mix shortening into flour; pour in buttermilk mixture. Make soft dough and knead until smooth. Roll out and cut with biscuit cutter. Brush one side with melted butter, fold over for Parker House rolls. Place in greased pan and let rise 1 1/2 hours in warm place. Bake at 425 degrees until brown. Prepared 2 hours before serving. |
