1 cup shortening (buttered flavored Crisco)
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar, divided
3 to 4 tbsp. milk, divided

Beat shortening and vanilla, with an electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Slowly add half the confectioners' sugar, beating well. Add 2 tablespoons of milk. Gradually beat in the remaining confectioners' sugar and enough milk to reach desired spreading consistency.
