The way I make them is basically with the exact same ingredients, but I just boil the cocoa, milk, butter, sugar for one minute then add the rest of the ingredients.. I never have boiled the peanut butter..

I substituted maple syrup for vanilla, so we'll see. Just made them.

Thank you so much for this recipe. I recall making this recipe as a teenager, one of my Mom's favorite recipes and I lost it over the years.

I always spoon the chocolate into mini cones (regular cones work to). It is an awesome kids treat and perfect Christmas desert. Try them frozen as well.

I love this recipe, but I always cut the amount of oats in half. I also add the vanilla and peanut butter at the same time I add the oats... I never boil the vanilla or peanut butter.

I agree... add the peanut butter and vanilla at the end when you stir in the oatmeal. Also, I've used only quick oats and boiled about 1 minute maybe 1.5 minutes. They are a family favorite all year!

I fixed as above and they turned out delicious!!!! Reminds me of as when my granny made them.

Isn't it great?! I've also adjusted the recipe: Use Raw/Turbinado sugar instead of the white sugar, and less than 2 cups. I like using chunky peanut butter, and I've also added coconut at times.

Hmm, add coconut. This is one of my favorite cookies! Next time I cook them, i'll try coconut. This sounds yummy!!

 Renee (North Carolina) says:
Coconut sounds good. How much do you add? And I usually add 3 cups of oatmeal but how can I fix them if I only have 1 cup? Will it be just as good?

 Lee (United States) replies:
Make 1/3 of the recipe.

Couldn't find my old, old recipe, but this is pretty close. I have to make these cookies EVERY Christmas or I'm in trouble with my kids. :-) I also bring the mixture to a boil (1 minute) and then add vanilla, peanut butter and oats. One tip: don't use low fat butter or milk. It will not work. Also, I wouldn't try the coconut. These cookies can flop if you add too much of one thing or another. Been there, done that. Well, I'm off to make these yummy cookies. Merry Christmas.

I've been making these for YEARS and the trick is to bring the sugar, butter, cocoa and milk to a full rolling boil, THEN start timing for one minute. Remove from heat then add your oats, pb, and vanilla. If you boil these too long they'll be dry and hard and crumbly, so watch your cooking time carefully - only one minute after it comes to a full, rolling boil!

My grandma used to make these... Great cookies... I make it now and call it junk... Put it in a bowl and eat it hot... Yumm!!!

My daughter is allergic to peanut butter so we have tried with butterscotch chips. I am working on a batch with crunchy sunbutter now (sunflower butter yummmm!).

Thanks for the recipe. My mom always boiled everything just the way the recipe is. Either way they are just as good!
