CALICO BEAN SOUP 
2 c. bean mixture
1 lg. chopped onion
1 (28 oz.) can of chopped tomatoes
1 tsp. chili powder
1 clove garlic
Salt & pepper to taste
Smoked ham bone or ham hocks

Wash beans, cover with water and add 2 tablespoons of salt. Let set overnight. Drain and rinse in morning. Add 2 quarts of water with ham bone or hocks. Simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Add rest of ingredients and simmer 1 more hour. "Makes lots."
