CROCK-POT APPLE BUTTER
Approximately 3 lb. apples
3 cups sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
Dash of salt
3/4 cup water or fresh apple cider

Fill Crock-pot 3/4 full with peeled, cored and sliced apples. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until evenly mixed. Cover and cook on low setting overnight or until the butter is of a thick, spreadable consistency.

If apple butter has too much liquid, remove lid and cook on high until thickened. Stir often as butter thickens to prevent scorching.

Store in refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. Freeze for longer storage.

Variation: For a less sweet apple butter, substitute 1 cup honey for the sugar.

To can the apple butter, pack into hot jars leaving 1/4-inch headspace and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

Crock-Pot Apple Butter

This turned out great. Everyone says it is the best apple butter ever! My apples didn't cook down so the next morning I poured it all in the blender on puree. Then I put it back in the crockpot to let it thicken. AND an ideal for the apple butter: I have a rival sandwich maker. I cut croissant dough in squares, put apple butter in the center, folded them over and pinched the edges into triangles, and cooked each one in the sandwich maker until dough was golden brown!!! SCRUMPTIOUS!!!

Just want to remind people that are reducing the amount of sugar in the recipe and still canning: sugar is being used as a preservative as well as a sweetener in this recipe. Cutting back too much on the sugar and still canning may lead to problems with bacterial growth!

Made it with fresh pears, it was awesome, just a tad too sweet, today I'm making it with granny smiths, cutting back on the sugar though.

Very good recipe. I used 2 cups of white sugar and 1 cup of brown sugar much better. It only made 6 half pints but very tasty.

Has anyone tried using Splenda for the sugar in the applebutter recipe? It really sounds good but both my hubby and I have to restrict our sugar. I am going to try it with Splenda but wondered if there were any special tips for using it??

I have used this recipe before so came back to find it this year. The apples off my tree were very small this year. Granny Smiths. I peeled as best as I could, but the peeler just didn't do the trick. So there were lots of peelings left. I put the butter in the blender after it all cooked down, and it is wonderful. And now to can them in jars.

Great recipe! To make it a little easier, I didn't peel the apples and only cut them in quarters. I used my hand blender once they softened up a bit. I also only used 1/4 cup of honey (and no sugar) and it was plenty sweet for my taste.

This was really good. On the sweet side. I did substitute 1 cup brown sugar and 2 cups Splenda for the 3 cups sugar. I will cut back some of the Splenda next time but came out tasting good. Wish it had more apple taste than all the spices. Might cut back some on them too. Family liked it. Very easy!!

This is my first time making apple butter, but I make applesauce, pie and other treats all the time. I have grown to like a darker, more savory sweetness so I altered the recipe some. After reading the reviews,I reduced the liquid to 1/2 cup - my liquid is a 50/50 mixture of dark vanilla rum and Amaretto, I used only 1/2 cup dark brown sugar (the Braeburn and Gala apples I am using are sweet enough) and added a tsp of almond bakers emulsion. I also substituted Vietnamese cinnamon for the typical variety. I will let you know how it all turns out! Thanks for sharing your experiences; your insights certainly informed my choices... stay tuned...and..um...wish me luck!

Ok.. so the cooking has started.. been about 3 hours now. I have no patience so I tasted the apples... Not sweet enough so I added another 1/2 cup dark brown sugar. PERFECT.. this is gonna be a great batch of apple butter... stay tuned... I think I hit it so you no longer have to wish me luck!

Great recipe... it's a little sweet for my taste, Im more of a dark and savory sweetness kinda gal myself. I should have trusted my alterations, but let the hubs talk me into adding about 1/2 cup of raw sugar. Still, its good stuff! Thanks for the recipe and thanks for all of your insights!!!!

Very good recipe! I love it. I did use a potato masher a few times to break up the apple chucks. Very nice apple butter.

I heap the crockpot full of apples just high enough that the lid fits on and cook away, when it gets cooked down, then I add ingredients. Easy awesome recipe and taste wonderful.
