BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
4 qt. sliced pickling cucumbers
3 c. vinegar
5 c. sugar
1 tsp. turmeric
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
1 1/2 tsp. mustard seed
Sm. amount of salt and ice

Slice cucumbers 3/16 inch thick, a layer of cucumbers, and dump ice cubes over each layer. Let stand 3 hours, sprinkle a little over each layer. Drain off water, add cucumbers to mixture and heat just to boiling point, let stand 1 month before using. Add a pinch of pickling alum to each jar.
