BEST EVER HOTDOG SAUCE
1 lb. ground beef, cooked
1 medium onion, small diced
1 tablespoon chili seasoning
1 tablespoon mustard
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 large bottle ketchup (Hunts)

Brown hamburger in a medium saucepan; while meat is browning, dice onion and add to meat. Cook meat and onion until no longer pink. (If meat is fatty, drain but leave some grease for flavor.)

Add the chili seasoning and mustard to meat mixture, while keeping a low flame under saucepan, stir. Add vinegar and sugar.

While stirring, add ketchup a little at a time to desired consistency. Cook for 45 to 50 minutes on low heat, stirring often.

Note: If you cook the sauce uncovered, it will become somewhat thicker, if you have added too much ketchup.

This recipe is used in our local festival hotdog booth, it's very good and very simple.)

HOW MUCH DOES THIS MAKE? I AM LOOKING FOR A GOOD HOT DOG SAUCE TO MAKE FOR MEALS ON WHEELS. I NORMALLY FEED ABOUT 150-160 PEOPLE ONCE A MONTH.

 Renee Smith (Texas) replies:
This recipe might feed a larger crowd: Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

I'm uncertain about how many this one feeds as well. Hope this helps. Thank you for feeding people. You are a good person.

One more thing... read the reviews... as someone added a can of tomato sauce and said it enhanced the flavor overall. I have not made this recipe, though I had just read the "Coney Island Hotdog Sauce" recipe before this one and read your review/question.

This is a great recipe. Had family guests for after Halloween trick or treating and fixed hot dogs for the whole crew. It was a hit and just a few days later we will enjoy it again while watching football on TV. I modified the recipe somewhat by omitting the vinegar this time and it tastes much better to my wife. I have to agree with her on the first batch, the vinegary taste took away a little from the taste and while still good, the batch I made today for use later tonight tastes much better. One other hint that I think enhances the recipe is after the meat and oniions cook, if you have a little hand chopper, then chop the meat up even finer than normal hamburger meat..I used chopped sirloin 90/10 and had very little shrinkage and therefore had little fat to drain off. but thanks to Ruscee for a great recipe. My son called a short time ago and wants to make it for his wife and two girls. So sending the link off after this comment.

Try cutting back on the sugar and adjust to taste before adding more. Everyone's pallets are different and you may like it after all.

I always "dilute" (as needed) any of my chili recipes with beer rather than water and use less than a full bottle of ketchup in this particular recipe.

I'm gonna try this recipe today on grilled jumbo pork hot dogs. Won't be using the vinegar, will adjust the sugar so that it's not too sweet, and will be using my home chili seasoning. I'll post my results later tonite.

Well Gina, I didn't see your results review. What did you think?

Think I will brown beef/onion... then transfer to a slow cooker and finish off with rest of ingredients. This has all the right ingredients to be great...

Hint for the vinegar and sugar, if you add the vinegar while browning your burger it will mash up better and wont give it as strong of vinegar taste. Also substitute the sugar for brown sugar but only add to taste as some don't like it very sweet. I also used tomato sauce instead of ketchup. Actually these adjustments I added is in a recipe for a very well known restaurants that's known for their hot dog chili here in my small town in KY (wont say where cause I don't wanna give their name) Good Luck!
