DATE FILLED COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. sweet milk
3 1/2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

FILLING:

2 c. dates
2/3 c. sugar
2/3 c. boiling water
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 tbsp. butter

FILLING: Cook until thick.

COOKIES: Cream sugar and shortening, add vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately; beat well and chill dough. Roll out 1/8 inch thick and cut cookies. Put filling in one and cover with one. Press together with fork. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.
