FROSTED CHOCOLATE ALMOND
BROWNIES

2 sq. unsweetened chocolate
3/4 c. sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. soft shortening
1 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs, unbeaten
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 c. chopped almonds
Chocolate Frosting
Blanched almonds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8 x 8 x 2 inch baking pan. Then melt the unsweetened chocolate, in top of a double boiler, over hot, not boiling, water.

Sift flour with baking powder and salt. In medium bowl, using a wooden spoon beat the shortening with the sugar until light. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then the almond extract and the melted chocolate.

Stir in flour mixture, chopped almonds. Turn into prepared pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until the surface is firm to the touch. Cool right in the pan on wire rack. Frost brownies: top with blanched almonds. Makes 15.
