CAKE: Cream 1/2 cup butter, 3/4 teaspoon vanilla and 1 cup sugar well; beat in 2 eggs. Sift together 2 cups sifted flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt; beat in alternately with 2/3 cup milk. Pour into a greased 9" round pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until done. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pan.
CREAM FILLING: Mix 1/3 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt; stir in 1 1/4 cups milk. Bring to boil, stirring; cook 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat. Slowly stir 1/4 cup hot mixture into 1 beaten egg, return to pan; heat just to boiling. Stir in 1 tablespoon butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Cover; chill.
CHOCOLATE GLAZE: Melt 2 tablespoons butter and 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate. Stir in 1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar and 2 tablespoons boiling water until smooth. Use immediately. To assemble, split cake layer and fill with cream filling. Spread top with chocolate glaze.
