HUSH PUPPIES 
1 c. self-rising cornmeal
1/2 c. self-rising flour
3 tsp. sugar
1/2 c. onions, minced
1 egg
2/3 milk
2 tbsp. shortening, melted
Vegetable oil for frying

Mix cornmeal, flour and sugar. Stir in onions, egg, milk and shortening; blend thoroughly. Drop by teaspoon into deep hot oil (375 degrees) and fry until golden brown. Makes about 36 hush puppies.
