HUSH PUPPIES 
1 egg
2 c. buttermilk
2 c. cornmeal
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. salt
2 tbsp. all purpose flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
6 tbsp. chopped onion
Vegetable oil or shortening

Beat egg and buttermilk together. Combine dry ingredients and add chopped onion. Blend in egg-buttermilk mixture. Heat oil to 370 degrees. Drop batter in small balls into hot oil. Fry until evenly browned. Drain on paper towels and serve at once. Yield: 12 to 14 hush puppies.
