BUTTERMILK BISCUITS 
1 3/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. shortening
2/3 c. buttermilk

Sift dry ingredients together. Cut shortening into dry ingredients until the consistency of cornmeal. Make a well; add buttermilk. Stir until dough leaves side of bowl, about 1/2 minute. Turn dough onto a floured board and knead lightly for 1/2 minute. Pat with flour until 1/4 to 1/2 inches thick. Cut with floured biscuit cutter. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. Makes 10 to 12 biscuits.
