CHOCOLATE ITALIAN COOKIES 
4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
4 tbsp. cocoa
3 tbsp. baking powder
2 tsp. cloves
1 (12 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 sm. jar maraschino cherries, chopped
1/2 c. chopped nuts; optional
1 egg
Water

Mix all dry ingredients. Add egg and shortening. Mix slowly adding just enough water to make a soft cookie dough. Add chips, cherries, and nuts. Mix well. Place by heaping teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets, at least 1 inch apart. Bake at 375 degrees until bottoms are lightly browned, but centers are still soft. Remove and cool on plate.

Because this cookie is not particulary sweet the cloves were overwhelming! I would substitute cinnamon and nutmeg or eliminate the cloves all together. Possibly replace with vanilla? Using a small scoop, this made 7 dozen cookies and they needed to bake about 15 minutes, more or less depending on type of baking sheet used.
