PRAHL'S GERMAN BROWN COOKIES
 
2 c. brown sugar
2 c. dark syrup
1 c. milk
1 c. lard
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

Bring first 6 ingredients to a boil and pour over soda, baking powder, and salt. Add this to a sifter full of flour. Let stand a week. Then add rind and juice of 2 lemons. Add enough flour to make dough look greasy and quite stiff. Roll and cut into circles. Dip top in beaten egg then sugar and broken nuts. Bake at 350 degrees until done.
