1/4 - 1 c. sugar 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. salt 2 c. freshly crumbed bread 3 c. sliced apples 1/4 c. water 2 tbsp. lemon juice 2 tsp. lemon rind 2 tbsp. butter Mix sugar, spices and salt. Place 1/3 of crumbed bread in a buttered baking dish. Cover this layer with 1/2 of apples. Over this sprinkle 1/2 of sugar, spices and salt mixture. Repeat this process. Mix lemon juice, rind and water and pour this over the contents of the baking dish. Dot top with the remaining 1/3 of bread and small pieces of butter. A small quantity of boiling water may be added if apples are not juicy. Cover and cook in a 350 degree oven about 40 minutes. Remove cover after 25 minutes of cooking. Serve hot or cold. Serves 6. |
