1/2 to 1 c. sugar 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. salt 2 c. freshly crumbed bread 3 c. pared, sliced apples 1/4 c. water 2 tbsp. lemon juice 2 tsp. grated lemon rind 2 tbsp. butter Mix sugar, nutmeg and salt together. The amount of sugar depends on tartness of apples. Put 1/3 of the crumbed bread in greased baking dish. Cover with 1/2 the apples. Sprinkle with 1/2 the sugar, spice and salt mixture. Repeat layers. Mix lemon juice, water, and lemon rind. Pour this mixture over the top. Dot with butter. Cover. Bake 25 minutes, remove cover and bake an additional 15 minutes at 350 degrees. |
