FRIED CABBAGE AND NOODLES
1 head of cabbage
1 box of elbow noodles
butter

Cut up head of cabbage and saute in butter in skillet. Reduce heat and continue to cook slowly. Meanwhile, in a large pot of salted boiling water, prepare 1 box of elbow macaroni according to package directions.

Once noodles are done and the cabbage is soft, drain the noodles and mix with the buttered cabbage.

Cover and let simmer on low for about 15 minutes.

This is a very old recipe that tastes fantastic. You can almost eat the whole thing yourself. Enjoy!!!

My Ma made this by Frying bacon first... remove bacon from pan... crumble. Use the grease to fry the cabbage and EGG noodles instead of elbow.

I can't think of an easier recipe that tastes this good! Used 12 oz bag of egg noodles instead of elbows, half a large head of cabbage and a half package of turkey bacon plus salt & pepper, onion/garlic powder. Didn't have butter so used canola & olive oil. Feeds an army. Two thumbs up!!

I first had this in the 60's, from a Lithuanian woman related by marriage. She used egg noodles and added a teaspoon of caraway seeds and heavy on the black pepper. I was only 8 or 9 at the time, but it was so different from my own family's Sicilian food I memorized it and we would make it occasionally as a break from traditional dishes. To this day, I still do.

I also had this as a child. I used egg noodles. Made it for Easter -- it was gone. Will definitely make it again and try some of the variations. Funny, as I child I didn't like cooked cabbage, but now I love it.

I have made this recipe for years, but it is better when you add a small onion and saute with the cabbage. I also use egg noodles, but you are right you can almost eat the whole thing by yourself.

This is a great recipe, but we use egg noodles and when the sauteed cabbage and egg noodles have had time to cook together, we add smoked sausage to it! Yumo!

My grandmother was from Hungary and my mom always made this. The only difference is that she used a lot of black pepper. It is excellent. I love it!

I'm 90 and my mother made this when I was a kid in Hungary. Only she shredded the cabbage and fried it till it was dark brown and then added it to egg noodles. Either way, a great recipe.

 Linda Gerle (Arizona) replies:
I use the packaged shredded tri-color cole slaw..saves my knuckles from being shredded with the cabbage. My Aunt Mick who learned to cook from her mother in law from Hungary taught me to make the homemade egg noodles. This is a must for New Years Day...I always love to remember Aunt Mick and her great Hungarian recipes she so generously shared with me and my children.

Add a bit of salt to the cabbage. It will help draw the water out, reduce cooking time, and also reduce the amount of butter needed in the end.

Tried this tonight. Great taste! Never heard of this combination before but boy is this good. Used some soy sauce, served with sliced tomatoes, cornbread wedges and iced tea. Great simple, delicious meal! Think I'll try all the other variations too.

Love, love, love this recipe. I had never heard of it before. My husband got a head of cabbage from a client at work and I was lost as to what to do with it. We didn't have corned beef nor did we have the money to run out and by one. This was absolutely perfect. We had pork chops in the freezer, so I made those with it. We will definitely have this again, and try the different variations. Thanks!

I was leery, but I had 2 heads of CSA cabbage to use up. It was GOOD. Okay, so I added garlic, garlic pepper and garlic salt (and parmesan) , but I tasted the buttered cabbage while it was cooking and it was good.
